The Ongoing Debate in THA Planning

The role of 3D planning in total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains a point of discussion among orthopaedic surgeons. While 3D pre-operative planning offers advanced simulation tools and higher templating accuracy, it often comes with added costs and the potential for increased patient radiation exposure due to CT scans.

A Targeted Approach to When 3D Adds Value

This study set out to determine when 3D planning is genuinely necessary by comparing it with traditional 2D planning methods. By examining patient spinopelvic risk factors and simulating daily activities, the research aimed to identify scenarios where 3D planning adds value—ultimately guiding surgeons toward a more targeted, cost-effective approach to THA preparation.
